Erdan bans PA from holding an event in Jerusalem

Internal Security Minister Gilad Erdan (Likud) on Sunday signed an order banning an event that the Palestinian Authority (PA) was planning to hold in Jerusalem, the Israeli capital, in a blatant breach of sovereignty.

The event, on the topic of the “rejuvenation of the Palestinian cultural institutions in Jerusalem,” was planned to be held at the Palestinian National Theater, also known as El-Hakawati Theater. The theater is situated in the eastern Wadi al-Joz neighborhood of Jerusalem, located just northeast of the Old City and near to Hebrew University’s Mount Scopus Campus.

Erdan found out about the intentions to hold the event under the auspices of the PA without any written permission having been granted as required by law.

In addition to banning the event, Erdan ordered the owners of the theater and all those taking part in the event not to allow it to be held in Jerusalem, or any other place in the sovereign territory of Israel.

“I will not allow any harm to the sovereignty of the state of Israel, (and will not) let the Palestinian Authority put its foot in the territories of the state of Israel,” said Erdan.

The PA has long been seeking to expand its control, with it being revealed last week that the European Union (EU) is funding an illegal road for the PA in Area C – sections of Judea and Samaria that are to be under full Israeli authority according to the 1994 Oslo Accords.

The EU has likewise been revealed to be funding illegal Arab settlements in Area C, in a breach of the Oslo Accords that the EU is itself a signatory to.
