An off duty volunteer police officer in Sderot played a pivotal role in arresting a burglar in the southern city last Saturday.
The volunteer who was not on shift notified police headquarters in the city, who sent officers to the scene. The officers were helped by the volunteer who identified the perpetrator. The burglar jumped from the second story window into a nearby apartment.
Police began searching for the individual, a 26 year-old who was known to police, and headed towards his home. The volunteer as well as the officer on duty apprehended the suspect near his home after the suspect had tossed the stolen items near by.
After a short search of the area, the stolen items were found and the suspect was brought in for questioning to the police station. The owner of the burgled apartment identified the items stolen.
The suspect was indicted Sunday at the Ashkelon Magistrate Court, and is expected to be imprisoned until the end of the legal proceedings against him.
