Gunfire During Fight Between Jewish Soccer Fans and Arabs

A racially-motivated fight between Jewish soccer fans and Arabs led to gunshots tonight (Saturday).

Police say that the incident occurred about two hours before a match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa began.

Fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv arrived at the grassy area near the Tirat Hacarmel stadium and came into conflict with about 150 Arabs celebrating the holiday of Eid al-Adha. During the fight, one of the Arabs pulled out a handgun and fired in the air.

The two sides were only separated by police intervention. Two soccer fans were lightly injured, one after being hit in the head by a stone. Both refused to enter ambulances.

A 60-year-old Arab resident of eastern Jerusalem was arrested for firing the gun. Five other people were detained for questioning.
